Disease Modeling/Drug Discovery

Disease modeling using human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) for understanding the molecular basis and mechanisms of human diseases has unlocked new possibilities for drug discovery. The availability of donor-specific iPS cells, coupled with gene-editing techniques and genome-wide association studies (GWAS), provide a powerful in vitro disease modeling system amenable for drug development and screening studies. These iPSC-derived iCell® products can be used for:

  • Innate Disease Modeling: Models generated from donors with specific disease genotypes
  • Engineered Disease Modeling: Apparently healthy normal donor iPSCs genome engineered to introduce a disease-specific mutation
  • Induced Disease Modeling: Using cell culture conditions to invoke a disease state response

Toxicology/Safety Pharmacology

Toxicity testing and safety pharmacology requires physiologically relevant human cells for the development of in vitro studies that better predict toxicity. iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes are being used for predicting drug-induced cardiac arrhythmia, while iPSC-derived neural cells are being used to assess neurotoxicity of drug candidates. These cells provide:

  • Biologically and physiologically relevant human cell models
  • Highly pure cell types
  • Consistency between batches to provide highly reproducible results

Potency Testing & Applied Markets

iCell products have proven to be effective alternatives to animal models for development, manufacturing and potency testing of pharmaceutical compounds. For example, iCell GABANeurons have been applied to the assay of therapeutic-grade botulinum toxin permitting substantial cost savings and a more humane approach to potency testing.
